The Sir Henry Royce Foundation
Funding the Foundation
The Foundation is financed entirely by donations and gifts in cash or
in kind. All donations in cash are tax deductible and receipts are
issued for tax purposes. Donations in kind must satisfy the
Foundation's Collection Policy and if tax deductibility is sought, must
be valued by an approved valuer. All donations are recorded in
permanent records held by the Foundation which are maintained by
Gilbert Ralph MBE. Those donations are acknowledged by the Chairman of
Trustees by letter. In the case of major donations, eg, property, cars,
etc, the Foundation will provide documentation entitled "Deed of Gift"
to properly formalise the donation. It is also possible to specify
donations to the Foundation in a Will and the Foundation will provide
the appropriate form of wording for this purpose on request.
Whilst the Trustees are more than happy to accept
donations of
significance, small donations on a regular basis are also welcomed.
Another way to assist the Foundation financially is to purchase a
Foundation lapel badge and a car badge. For financial donations of
$500.00 and over a platinum lapel badge is awarded at no charge.
In regard to finance generally, the Foundation depends
on its
supporters for its ability to continue with all of its activities,
which are of considerable benefit to Rolls-Royce enthusiasts throughout
Australia and the rest of the world.
Foundation Progress
After negotiations with the Board of the Fox Classic Car Museum we were
delighted to be allocated space in its Museum Building located at 26-28
Blyth Street, Melbourne, Victoria. The building is heritage listed and
historically important as it was the original Royal Mint in the Colony.
The Foundation's Archives are kept in secure accommodation at this
location. Our area in the Museum is named "The Sir Henry Royce
Foundation" and on display are selections of Royce cranes, a number of
Royce designed aero engines as well as Rolls-Royce motor cars owned by
the Museum and others.
In another area of activity to support the objectives
of the
Foundation, the Foundation has published the magnificent book by Tom
Clarke and David Neely - "Rolls-Royce and Bentley in the Sunburnt
Country". Anyone who has not purchased a copy is really missing out on
a superb production. In a review by the RROC Inc in America the
reviewer, David Mulvany, finished his glowing tribute to the authors by
stating:
"I have long advocated that Lawrence
Dalton should
be knighted for his services to Rolls-Royce literature. After reading
this magnificent work I now propose that both Tom Clarke and David
Neely each be rewarded for their efforts with a Dukedom!"
The Foundation has taken part in the purchase and
restoration of parts of a Royce crane in Melbourne - thus saving this
valuable piece of Sir Henry Royce's early design for posterity and from
certain destruction.
The Foundation has followed leads to Rolls-Royce
commercial engines
and other valuable memorabilia such as early share certificates for
F.H. Royce Limited - the proposed purchase price was beyond our means
in regard to the latter! The Foundation is also involved in the
preparation of a history of the Rolls-Royce Owners' Club of Australia -
something that will be of considerable value when all of the original
members of that Club have disappeared.
For some years now the Foundation has been
negotiating with
The Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation in England to reproduce a
series of the early Silver Ghost General Arrangement drawings. Progress
has been slow although initial agreement has been reached that the
drawings will be made available. Difficulties have been experienced in
obtaining photographic or electronic copies of the relevant drawings.
Nevertheless, progress is being made.
Each year the Foundation selects a person who has made a
significant contribution to the pursuit of excellence in all matters
which are objectives of the Foundation. By kind agreement with the
Federal Council of the Rolls-Royce Owners' Club of Australia, the
perpetual trophy of the Foundation is presented to the winner or
winners at the annual RollsRoyce Owners' Club Federal Rally closing
dinner.
The first award was made in 1997 to Roger Fry of Western
Australia for
his superb restoration work;
1998 to Martin Bennett for his outstanding editorship of
"Præclarvm"
1999 to George Sevenoaks for his contribution to
all
matters concerned with Rolls-Royce
2000 to Barrie and Margaret
Gillings for their lifelong contribution to the movement
2001 to Tom Clarke for his co-authorship of Rolls-Royce
and Bentley in the Sunburnt Country
2002 to Eric Barrass, President, RREC(UK) for excellence
following the ideals of Sir Henry Royce
2004 to Eric and Beryl Rainsford for many years of
enthusiastic service to the RROCA
2005 to David McPhee for his contribution to State and
Federal Clubs and his superb restoration of the oldest Rolls-Royce in
Australia
2006 to David Neely for his important and dedicated work
in literary spheres.
All of these activities are for the benefit of
and for the achievement of our principal objective to recognise, expose and honour
the genius of Sir F Henry Royce.
